Periodontology & Periodontists In Delhi, India

Most of us know what gum disease/periodontal disease is. Periodontics/Periodontology is the dentistry specialty that covers the study, diagnosis & treatment (both surgical and non-surgical) of the diseases and conditions of the periodontium, i.e. the tissues that surround and support teeth. It also deals with maintaining/ improving the health and the aesthetics of these tissues.

Periodontium actually consists of four components - gingiva (Same as gums), cementum (This is a hard connective tissue that covers the tooth root. Patients who suffer from teeth sensitivity have cementum layer worn away.), alveolar bone (This is the part of the jaw bone that contains tooth sockets, that hold teeth.), and periodontal ligament. (Simply speaking, the periodontal ligament, or the PDL is what attaches the tooth to the alveolar bone.)

Periodontists are dentists who are experts in the in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, mentioned earlier. They also specialize in the placement of dental implants. In lay man's language, teeth implants are used for patients with missing teeth. The periodontist surgically places the implant, which can best be described as an artificial tooth root, then attaches a crown over it. These have several advantages over other tooth-replacement options, such as dentures and bridges. They have high-durability and often last a lifetime. The artificial roots fuse with the alveolar bone, so they actually become a part of you! No-one can figure that you have an artificial tooth in your mouth - appearance-wise, they look like your natural teeth.

You also visit a periodontist if you have oral inflammation. They provide scaling and root planning, the therapy that removes tooth tartar, cleans dental plaque and its products. Scaling and root planning are usually referred to as 'cleaning' by the layman. Another treatment provided is 'root surface debridement', which is done in the case of gum disease. The damaged tissue is removed in this procedure.

In India, in order to become a periodontist, a dentist must successfully complete a three-year MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) course in periodontics. It is a master's degree course. Specialized training and education is imparted in these three years. They are acquainted with the latest trends and technologies in the industry. Training is also given in cosmetic periodontal surgeries/ procedures. Educational requirements and the duration of the course/ certification varies from country to country.

Hopefully, now you all know what periodontics is, and who periodontists are. Keep your periodontium healthy!
